Looking into getting this laptop for my studies at tafe, but I’m not 100% sure whether 3ds Max will work on it.

Yep, 3DS Max will run fine on that PC- no problems, just make sure you have at least 4GB of RAM ( if you can afford it- get more, it will be worth it) because progs like 3ds max are memory intensive and will utilize anything you throw at it, so the more RAM you have to allocate, the better.
